US Education Stages
Middle School
Typically, middle school covers the 6th grade to the 8th grade. The students at this level are often referred to as "junior highers". They will be given more freedom and independence. They are allowed to move among different classrooms for different subjects. They will also be taught with more subjects, such as social studies, science, and language arts. Also, junior highers are able to choose some of their electives based on their interests.
High School
High school is the final stage of secondary education in the US, covering the 9th grade to the 12th grade. High School education focuses on more disciplines, such as general education, vocational and technical skills, arts, music, STEM, and sports. High schools sometimes also offer college preparation programmes to their students, for example, SAT, ACT, AP (Advanced Placement), IB (International Baccalaureate).

Traditionally, students enter college education at the age of 18. College education in the US lasts for 4 years, and each year is called by specific names. Freshman (1st year), Sophomore (2nd year), Junior (3rd year) and Senior (4th year). College entry is determined by several factors: GPA or other academic record at high school, standardised test results such as those of SAT and ACT.
The duration of postgraduate degrees is approximately 12 to 15 months. Such programmes are intended for further specialisation in addition to obtained undergraduate degree. Many students pursue postgraduate degrees with intention to break into professional sectors.
